Brentwood Home as a company has been manufacturing quality products for over 30 years, making them one of the long-standing household brands when it comes to mattresses and bedding. The Brentwood Home Cypress Gel Memory Foam Mattress is one of the most popular mattresses the company has to offer.

It is also one of the most highly-rated memory foam mattresses on Amazon, which is a good sign – as we have come to realize, sleeping preferences can be vastly different from individual to individual.

It’s important for a mattress to appeal to the majority of customers, because what we like is not necessarily what you will find appealing to you.

Therefore, in our Brentwood Home Cypress Gel Memory Foam Mattress review, we strive to provide detailed information about the product, and a summary from hundreds of customer feedback to help you reach an informed buying decision.

Brentwood Home Cypress Gel Memory Foam Mattress Review

Cypress Mattress offers a wide variety of foam density and thicknesses to choose from, available in the following measurements:

The 10-inch to 13-inch Brentwood Home Cypress mattresses consist of 4 layers:

Brentwood Home Cypress Gel Memory Foam Mattress Review layers

· Removable Cover. The bamboo-derived rayon cover is free from harmful toxins and replaceable for proper care and maintenance.

· Top Layer: New Zealand Wool. A sustainable natural material that wicks away moisture and acts as a natural fire barrier. This layer is also important for surface ventilation and temperature regulation.

· 2nd Layer: 2.5-Inch Gel Memory Foam. A foam technology that relieves pressure points by evenly distributing the body weight and reduces motion transfer. It is ideal for couples that experience sleep disturbances throughout the night. It is also certified safe by CertiPUR-US (more information below).

· 3rd Layer: 2.5-Inch Ventilated Airflow Foam. A layer of foam that allows continuous airflow for cool and pleasant sleep.

· Bottom Layer: 5-Inch Base Foam. This is a solid support base to ensure structural integrity and longevity of the mattress. It also absorbs your weight to dampen motion transfer and to prevent noise.

The Cypress mattress is made of gel memory foam technology with bamboo-derived rayon cover aimed at increasing comfort and reducing motion sleep transfer, as well as relieving pressure points such as neck and back.

The 9-inch variant comes with only 3 layers (without Airlux ventilated airflow foam), and is slightly firmer than the rest due to thinner gel memory foam layer.

The thicker variants tend to be plushier and preferred by side sleepers who exert majority of their body weight on a smaller surface.

According to studies by Textile Machine, Bamboo-derived rayon foam covers are characterized by an improved softness which is not only aesthetically preferred, but also exhibit relatively high moisture regained capacity – which means that moisture absorption is higher with up to 13% regain compared to that of cotton with only 7%.

As a result, the rayon foam cover surface that is in direct contact with the users’ body feels more comfortable and softer to the touch.

The gel memory foam that makes up the top layer is closest to the body, thus it is very sensitive to pressure and body heat when applied.

Since the firmness of the gel memory foam layer is sensitive to heat, body temperature transfer from sleeper to this layer will contribute to the softness of the mattress.

In addition, Cypress gel memory foam is characterized by open-cell technology that evenly distributes the weight of the sleeper instead of resisting it. This minimizes the chance of developing neck and back pain, as the pressure from these two common pressure points are distributed over a larger surface.

According to Brentwood Home, the density of the mattress layers are as follow:

  • Memory Foam Comfort Layer: 4lbs
  • Ventilated Cool Airflow Layer: 2lbs
  • Therapeutic Support Base: 2lbs

The density of a mattress generally correlates to the longevity of a mattress, as denser mattresses tend to last longer.

On average, lower density (2 to 5.4 lbs/ft) mattresses remain supportive and comfortable for about 6 to 7 years, while higher density mattresses maintain their structural integrity for around 8 years.

With that said, the longevity for individual mattresses can vary considerably. The values above are just an average.

All in all, the density of Brentwood Home Cypress Gel Memory Foam Mattress is lower than what we’d like for its price range.

While the comfort layer is denser at 4lbs and should be sufficiently durable, the airflow layer and support base are rated at only 2lbs, and these may be the first components to break down.

ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection. In simple terms it is a measurement of how hard or soft a foam is. In more accurate terms it’s the number of pounds of pressure required to indent 4″ of foam by 25% using a 50 square inch indentation.

Unfortunately, there is no definite ILD rating for this mattress as it is not officially revealed. On a firmness scale of 1 (firm) to 10 (plush), the 11-inch variant is rated to be a 4 (medium-firm), which the 13-inch variant is rated as 5 (medium).

Of course, preference for mattress firmness can be very different from a person to the next, with some users finding a same firmness to be too plush and others too firm.

If you prefer a plush and soft mattress, you can always add a soft mattress topper to adjust the firmness to your liking. However, if you like a firmer mattress, you may want to look into the 9-inch or 10-inch variant.

Just like many other manufacturers, the Brentwood Home Cypress mattress is compressed and shipped in a compact box to your doorsteps.

Unpack the mattress and leave it to expand to its original thickness for at least 24 to 48 hours before sleeping on it. Open your window if you are sensitive to odor, as there are bound to be some initial off-gassing (albeit minimal) for new mattresses.

Certification of Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress

Cypress Mattress Memory Foam is certified by the CertiPUR-US. This is a program administered by a non-profit organization, tasked to test and certify foams according to current chemical regulations.

A mattress foam certified by CentiPUR-US is:

· made without substances that can deplete the ozone

· manufactured with no PBDEs, TDCPP, or TCEP and other flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates

· completed with negligible concentration of volatile organic compounds that might affect the quality of air

This certification is becoming more important and shaping up to be a gold standard (along with other certifications) in the mattress industry for health considerations.

According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) can cause health effects such as ENT irritation, headache and nausea, damage to liver, kidney and central nervous system, and it is even suspected to cause cancer in humans.

All memory foam mattresses recommended in this website are Certi-Pur US certified.

What Do People Say About Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress?

There are quite a bit of variations between individuals in terms of preference for sleeping mattress – whether it’s firm, hard or soft, so we choose to look at hundreds of reviews for each product to capture the overall sentiment from the customers.

Overall, the memory foam mattress by Brentwood Home has managed a pretty good rating from its customers, with 69% of them awarding 5 stars and 14% awarding 4 stars (out of more than 2600 customer reviews at the time of writing).

The Brentwood Home Cypress mattress is a popular choice for those who are very sensitive to allergens in both physical and chemical forms. The mattress is said to have given them a natural feeling.

Customers who suffer from chronic pain, such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia have also found the mattress to relieve their pain and comfortable for long period of use.

This is partly attributable to the nature of open-cell technology that evenly distributes the weight of the sleeper and relieve common pressure points.

With that said, the edge support for this mattress is weaker and leaves more to be desired. If you tend to sleep close to the edges, you may be prone to rolling off the bed as the edges sinks relatively easily.

Fortunately, the mattress is pretty good at holding up its structural integrity even for heavier users. Customers weighing as much as 250 pounds found no signs of sagging and caving even after months of daily usage.

Should you Buy Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress?

Are there chemicals in the foam? Yes, but there is no way we can do away with chemicals when it comes to buying a mattress.

Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress adheres by the CentiPUR-US certification, which means that all chemicals used in the manufacturing of this product are in accordance with the existing chemical and industrial regulations.

None of the customers have complained about excessive smell and irritations from chemicals thus far, so off-gassing and discomfort from chemicals exposure should be minimal.

Even though the mattress is rated as medium-firm to firm, it may be a bit plushier than what you may expect. This is due to the nature of gel memory foam that distribute weight evenly and prevent build-up of pressure against any part of the body.

If you absolutely want a firmer mattress, get the 9-inch or 10-inch variants that feature thinner memory foam layer, and at the same time easier on your wallet as well.

While this Brentwood Home mattress is not the most affordable compared to its similar competitors, it excels at minimizing motion transfers and alleviating body ache.

If you suffer from chronic pain or find a lot of pressure build-up around your neck and back area, this mattress will be worth considering.
