Brooklyn Bedding Latex Mattress Review
Choosing a good mattress can be quite a daunting task.
As soon as you have decided on the size and type of mattress you want to purchase, you need to think about your sleeping pattern and choose a firmness that suits you and your partner.
Fortunately, Brooklyn Bedding made this choice pretty straight-forward for their customers.
They offer only one type of mattress (latex) in 3 different firmness – soft, medium and firm to cater to customers with different sleeping style.
While the medium firmness is by far their most popular offering, you should choose a firmness that is catered to your sleeping style.
Here’s a general guide on the firmness you should choose:
- Soft Comfort Level
The soft Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress offers an ultra-plush comfort that cradles and hugs your body but doesn’t sacrifice support.
It’s suitable mainly for side sleepers and back sleepers, as it provides adequate support for shoulders, back and hips in these sleeping positions. It doesn’t offer enough support for stomach sleepers who exert most of the pressure on their mid-section.
Choose soft comfort level if you like the ‘sink’ feeling of soft mattresses and love being hugged by your mattress, and if you are not a stomach sleeper.
- Medium Comfort Level
The medium Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress is their most popular firmness level that offers a luxurious plush feel with a firm support.
It’s good for side sleepers, back sleepers and stomach sleepers due to the good combination of plush and support that it provides.
Choose medium comfort level if you prefer a medium or firmer surface, where the mattress does not sink that much. If you have a sleeping partner with different sleeping positions, this will be the best compromise for both parties.
- Firm Comfort Level
The firm Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress is supportive and comfortable yet allows little depression when laying on the mattress.
It’s targeted towards back sleepers and stomach sleepers who exert more pressure onto their bodies and need proper support from the mattress. Not suitable for side sleepers as the firm surface may result in shoulder pains.
Choose firm comfort level if you dislike the ‘sink’ sensation and prefer a smoother, flat surface for sleeping. It’s also geared towards sleepers who need more support to back and hips area due to health and medical reasons.
These guidelines generally work well for most customers to find their suitable firmness.
However, if you find that the firmness level is not to your liking, Brooklyn Bedding does offer 120 days trial period and free return within this period of time.
Take a look inside the mattress, and you’ll find that its construction involves 3 distinct layers – a Tatalay latex foam, a Dunlop latex foam and a high-density polyurethane foam.
- Top Layer: 2″ of Tatalay latex layer. This layer is certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (more information below) and is safe even for babies and toddlers.
- 2nd Layer: 2″ of Dunlop latex layer. This layer provides a smooth transition from the body-contouring Tatalay latex comfort layer to the high-density, firm polyurethane foam that acts as the core layer of the mattress.
- 3rd Layer: 6″ of HD poly foam core. The high-density foam is ideal for longevity as it does not sag easily and prevents indentations on where you sleep.
- Mattress Cover: These layers are encased in a quilted breathable cover that sleeps cool and allows heat to transfer away from the sleeper’s body.
Brooklyn Bedding latex mattresses are compressed, rolled into a 19″ x 19″ x 45″ box and shipped directly to your house.
Upon unboxing, it is advisable to let the mattress decompress for 24 hours, or until it reaches a full thickness of 10 inches.
Fortunately, there is no off-gassing according to the reports of multiple customers. Some users who are sensitive to odors do detect latex smell at first, but it quickly dissipates within hours.
Brooklyn Bedding claims that their latex mattress is certified by both CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX Standard 100, but what do these terms mean to the average buyer?
The polyurethane foams (HD foam base) of the mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, which means they are made without ozone-depleters and are regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commissions for Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, VOC can cause health effects such as ENT irritation, headache and nausea, damage to liver, kidney and central nervous system, and it is even suspected to cause cancer in humans.
Being CertiPUR-US certified also confirms the absence of PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and heavy metals, as well as formaldehyde and forbidden phthalates in the polyurethane foams.
In the past, these harmful materials have been found in the end product or manufacturing process of some mattress, which gave rise to various certifications and standards in the mattress industry today.
The Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress is also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which is a worldwide, independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished, and finished textile products at all processing levels.
Compliance with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means that the Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress is tested to be free of harmful substances and complies with health standards, which is safe for even babies.

What Do People Say About Brooklyn Bedding Latex Mattress?
There are quite a bit of variations between individuals in terms of preference for sleeping mattress – whether it’s firm, hard or soft, so we choose to look at hundreds of reviews for each product to capture the overall sentiment from the customers.
Overall, the latex mattress by Brooklyn Bedding has managed a pretty good rating from its customers, with 80% of them awarding 5 stars, 15% awarding 4 stars and only 5% of customers awarding 3 stars or below (out of more than 280 customer reviews at the time of writing).
Most customers like the simple choices given for Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress on the subject of firmness. Out of the many customer reviews, the side sleepers are generally more comfortable with the soft mattress, while others are satisfied with the medium firmness.
Do not be fooled into thinking that the soft mattress is only for lighter people, as heavier side sleepers (up to 300 pounds) have found that the soft mattress provide adequate support throughout the night.
If you are predominantly a side sleeper, it is advisable to go for the soft mattress instead of medium or firm mattress to prevent shoulder and hip pains.
Customers who have had the soft mattress for years did not notice any sagging or indentations, so it’s safe to say that the structure of even the softest Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress can be maintained for a long period of time.
Most users who have varied sleeping positions are satisfied with the medium firmness as it provides the best compromise between plush and support, therefore suitable for any sleeping position.
A few customers who have chronic neck and back pain have found improvement with the firm mattress, which provides extra support on the biggest pressure points – neck, back and hips.
Stomach sleepers (who represents the minority) have also found the firm mattress to be comfortable as it provides good support for the mid-section of the body.
There aren’t much complaints on the build quality or comfort of the mattress, but a few customers are dissatisfied with the return policy of the company.
In some cases, Brooklyn Bedding requires that the customer donate their unwanted mattress to a local charity and send them the donation receipt before initiating a refund. This can be a hassle for the customer as it may be difficult to arrange donation to a local charity that wants to receive it.
As no further information can be found in their return policy, it may be on a case-by-case basis and to be discussed with customer service if you are initiating a return.

Should You Buy Brooklyn Bedding Latex Mattress?
We recommend this mattress if you have a limited budget, as it is one of the cheaper good latex mattresses out there. The only recommended latex mattress that has a cheaper price range is Lucid 10″ latex mattress.
It is also suitable for family who have young kids or are expecting a newborn baby, as the OEKO-TEX Class 1 certification makes sure that the bedding is safe for babies and toddlers.
Users have reported good durability with no indentations even after years of use, so you shouldn’t have to worry about its longevity.
There are no issues in its cooling capabilities as well, thanks to its quilted breathable mattress cover and perforated latex comfort layers.
However, we believe that the Eco Terra latex mattress is a more worthwhile investment for $100 to $200 more. It is made of natural latex and certified by the industry gold standard GOTS certification.
With that said, Brooklyn Bedding latex mattress is still an excellent choice given its affordable price points and customer satisfaction.
