Casper is a privately held, United States based e-commerce company that sells their Casper Sleep mattress online. It was launched in April 2014 by Philip Krim and co., and has sold $1 million dollars worth of products in the first 28 days.
Many consider Casper to be the Apple company in the mattress industry, where they revolutionized the way people buy mattresses.
Traditionally, potential buyers visit physical stores and try out mattresses and bedding before making their purchases.
While Casper has their own showrooms in New York City and Los Angeles, it was one of the first online-only mattress retailers and popularized mattress purchase from the internet.
Since then, there are multiple online brands that surfaced, but Casper remains one of the most popular choices.
However, does that mean Casper Sleep mattress is the best choice for you? Will you sleep better on it, or there are other choices out there that are more suitable for you?
We’ll find out in this Casper Sleep mattress review, where we go through the specifications of the mattress, what users say about the product, prices and warranties compared to other brands, as well as the pros and cons of the product in order to help you make the best buying decision.
Casper Sleep Mattress Review
Shopping for mattresses can be a very confusing task given the plethora of choices and specifications, so Casper tried to make it simpler by offering only 1 firmness (medium-firm) for different sizes.
So far it has proved to be a correct move given the highly positive feedback by its users.
The choice to sell mattresses online seems very intentional as well, as Casper is cutting out the middle-man in the purchasing process and passing the savings down to the end-users.
This results in an easy and linear buying experience for their customers, as they do not have to consider the types of materials used and sift through specifications for different models.
While Casper could have went for multiple product lines for different materials (latex mattress, memory foam mattress, coil mattress etc.), they chose to settle on a hybrid of latex open-cell top layer, as well as pressure-relieving memory foam underneath to remain cool and provide good body support.
- Top Layer: 1.5″ of hypoallergenic latex open-cell foam to keep cool and provides bounce. This layer exhibits high elasticity and conduct heat away from the mattress when you are sleeping.
- 2nd Layer: 1.5″ of visco elastic memory foam to provide pressure relief. This layer provides body-contouring characteristics to better support the body.
- 3rd Layer: 1.5″ of adaptive transition foam. This layer provides consistent weight distribution for deep comfort.
- Bottom Layer: 5″ of polyurethane support foam. This layer acts as a base that strengthens the comfort layers and adds durability.
These layers are enclosed in a woven polyester and polypropylene zipper cover that features premium textiles. The zip-cover is breathable and easy to clean.
Casper Sleep mattresses are shipped in a compact box measuring 19″ x 19″ x 42″ and can be unrolled upon arrival without leaving any fold-marks. View the unboxing video by Dan Rogers below:
Certifications of Casper Sleep Mattress
Casper claims that their mattress is designed and assembled with high-quality and resilient materials, which seems to hold true judging from customers’ feedbacks.
The foams are also Certi-Pur certified, meaning that they are made without ozone-depleting chemicals and are regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commissions Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
Being Certi-Pur certified also means that the mattress does not contain PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and heavy metals, as well as formaldehyde and forbidden phthalates.
This certification is becoming more important and shaping up to be a gold standard (along with other certifications) in the mattress industry for health considerations.
According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, VOC can cause health effects such as ENT irritation, headache and nausea, damage to liver, kidney and central nervous system, and it is even suspected to cause cancer in humans.

What Do People Say About Casper Sleep Mattress?
As there are quite a bit of variations between individuals in terms of preference for sleeping mattress – whether it’s firm, hard or soft, we choose to look at hundreds of reviews for each product to capture the overall sentiment from the customers.
The reviews for Casper Sleep mattresses are highly positive no matter where we look – whether it’s from the website of Casper itself, or neutral sources such as Amazon and Consumer Reports.
In fact, the Casper Sleep mattress was awarded as one of the Best inventions in 2015 by Time Magazines.
Most customers like the affordability and value proposition of the Casper mattress, as it is much cheaper than many of its competitors out there, while still delivering on the performance front.
They also applaud Casper’s 100-day return policy with free returns, which is not offered by all mattress manufacturers. Some charge a 15% restocking fee for returning the item.
The current version of Casper Sleep mattress (as of April 2017) is their 3rd reiteration, as there were complaints about the mattress being too firm with a lack of support in the earlier versions.
Since January 2017, the mattresses are shipped with a proprietary open-cell foam as the top layer, and it has provided a softer surface with excellent support. Users have reported increased comfort with each reiteration of the mattress.
It has also been reported by multiple users that the Casper mattress is excellent at absorbing movements and vibrations, so it is a point to note if you are sleeping with kids or pets on the same bed.
Vibrations from a pet jumping on the bed or rolling of a partner are mostly isolated and absorbed by the mattress layers.
It may be worth a try if you have lower back pain problems, as there are multiple accounts from users that the Casper mattresses solved their back pain issues. While the effects may vary from person to person, it is a remark worth noting and considering.
The only universal complaint about the mattress is the lack of edge support, so be careful if you are used to sleeping near the edge. It sinks easily and you may just roll off the bed if you are too close to the edge.

Should You Buy Casper Sleep Mattress?
Based on the ubiquitous good reviews on Casper Sleep mattress, there is a high chance you will be satisfied with your purchase.
However, as sleeping preference is highly subjective, there are a few criteria that you should consider before making your purchase.
While Casper is one of the more affordable choices, you may want to consider Lucid 10″ mattress if you are absolutely strapped for cash. The downside of Lucid is the limited trial period of only 30 days, while Casper offers 100 days trial period.
If warranty is of the utmost importance for you, consider Lucid or PlushBeds as they offer 25 years warranty instead of 10 years offered by Casper.
However, Casper Sleep mattress has been used by thousands of customers since 2014 and received overwhelmingly good ratings, with many of them giving praise for the premium quality with an affordable price tag and superb customer service.
The only downfall seems to be the weak edge support, so be mindful if you are used to sleeping near the edge of your bed.
It is good that Casper offers 100 days trial period with free shipping and return delivery, so it is risk-free to try out their mattress and return if you are not satisfied.
With that said, judging from their stellar reviews, this may not be a concern after all.
